The story of the land
Maryland made their first public appearance in March 2004 at The Stomach in Palmerston North. At the time the group consisted of Austin Boyle, Stephen Walker and Shaun Wos a Highschool trio performing pop-punk numbers in the style of Blink-182. The group continued in a similar fashion throughout 2004, playing gigs around the place. They competed in the Smokefree Rockquest, reaching the Manawatu Regional Finals, and were awarded the "Creative Sounds Future Recording Artist Award" which entitled the recording of two tracks at The Stomach with Craig Black. These two song, accompanied by 5 others recording in January 2005 were placed on a debut EP - 'Fertiliser'. Late 2005 saw the departure of Stephen and then Shaun, as conflicting commitments took priority. They were replaced in turn by Jono Hicks on drums and Vincent Olsen-Reeder as head bass-man. Marylands sound has now developed to a more confused mixture of genres, with influence ranging from The Cure to The Jimi Hendrix Experience, but somehow keeping a slighlty punk feel.
Feel free to download a few songs from 'Fertiliser'.
